Department Overview

Pratt & Whitney Materials and Processes Engineering (MPE) organization in East Hartford, CT is looking for an engineer who can support development of tribological materials and coatings, and failure investigations related to wear of gas turbine engine components.

The candidate will become part of a highly focused team in a high tech, fast moving and challenging environment. The candidate will work at the interface of physical research and technical development of the technologies applied in the aerospace jet engines. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Executing failure investigations related to wear of engine components
  • Supporting rig and product testing, including data analysis and post-test characterization, of tribological materials and coatings
  • Development and testing of lubricants for threaded fasteners followed by implementation into design systems
  • Working with external vendors and internal partners to develop and standardize innovative testing procedures for tribological interfaces under various contact and environmental conditions
  • Supporting development and implementation of advanced tribological coatings for gas turbine engine applications
  • Supporting development of physics-based analytical models in application to novel materials and coatings and their behavior during manufacturing and life cycle in jet engine
  • Developing and executing project plans and cost estimates, meeting schedule milestones and reporting progress to senior management
  • Support of production processes to meet business needs and customer requirements. Responsibilities would include root cause analysis, brainstorming solutions, implementing corrective actions, and ensuring elimination of root cause

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience, or
  • An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience
  • US Citizen or US Person due to government contracts

Preferred Qualifications              

The candidate will cooperate with cross functional teams including Materials Development, Mechanical Systems, Aftermarket & Sustainment Engineering, Structures Discipline and Manufacturing. Flexibility in thought and approach is required. This position preferably requires master’s degree and the following skills:

  • Knowledge of and experience in high temperature tribology
  • Knowledge of and experience in solid lubricants
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in physics-based materials and processes models at different length and time scales and associated experimental research to understand material properties.
  • Strong attention to details and ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Familiarity with risk analysis, exceptional technical analysis skills to determine root cause of failure and provide feedback and recommendations
  • Experience working with diverse teams and multi-years multidisciplinary programs
  • Have strong communication skills and be highly motivated
  • High level of communication and cooperation with team members
  • Experience in data collection and management, data analysis methods and computational methods is highly desired
